Herman Croux co-chaired the session on Artificial Intelligence at the 2018 Annual Conference in Rome of the International Bar Association. The session outlined what ‘AI’ is and why it is different to existing technologies like software and hardware. The session then moved onto a more focused debate on the potential impacts of AI on the creative industries, and investigated whether machines can own copyright in works and patent new industrial processes – all of which have been created by robotic autonomous systems acting without human involvement.
