Belgium allows since April 2017 employers to impose flexible working time schedules. This means that aside of the existing normal work schedule, the employer may impose through an amendment of its company work rules a minimum and maximum schedule under which 5 hours more or 5 hours less per week can be worked.
The option for the employer to have its employees work longer workweeks to be compensated with shorter, will allow him to level out increased or reduced levels of work or periods with increased vacation or sickness of staff, without hiring additional staff or paying expensive overtime hours.
